The Technology

Circular, resilient desalination. No inputs but sunlight, waste heat and seawater.

Desolenator uses solar thermal energy or low-grade industrial waste heat to evaporate salt or contaminated water and collect pure condensate. The output is ultrapure water, free of dissolved solids, pathogens, and chemical residue. Target cost: $1 USD per 1,000 litres.

Being selected as an XPRIZE semi-finalist validates what we have proven in the field: that solar thermal desalination can deliver ultrapure water at a cost the world can actually afford. The prize is an accelerant. The technology is already working.

What Semi-Finalist Status Means

Demonstrated working technology

The XPRIZE Water Scarcity competition does not select teams based on proposals or prototypes. Semi-finalist status is awarded only to organisations that have already demonstrated working technology at meaningful scale. Desolenator, in partnership with Silal, Strategic Partner for Phase 2 of the XPRIZE Water Scarcity Competition, is one of 20 teams worldwide to have cleared that bar.

01
Open global competition
674 teams from across the world expressed interest in competing. XPRIZE evaluated technical approach, team capability, and evidence of real-world deployment potential. Desolenator entered with a working system already operating in the field.
Cleared
02
Independent technical review
Independent technical review A panel of independent scientists and engineers assessed each team's data, operational track record, and cost projections. Desolenator submitted evidence of a live pilot system producing water in the Abu Dhabi desert.

03
Proven technology, in the field
During XPRIZE qualification testing, Desolenator's system ran two tasks simultaneously: producing ultrapure water from high-salinity Gulf seawater for XPRIZE analysis, while converting saline groundwater into irrigation water at Silal's Innovation Oasis in Abu Dhabi. Real conditions. Uninterrupted.
Cleared
04
Semi-finalist: 20 teams remain
In total 674 teams entered. 20 advance. Desolenator is one of them. Phase 2 demands proof at scale: safe, affordable water for communities, agriculture, and industry where water is scarce. Desolenator's system was built for exactly that.
Active
05
Final judging & prize award
Teams meeting the final criteria share a $119M prize pool. Performance is independently verified across three measures: cost, quality, and volume. The target: 1,000 m³ per day, to WHO drinking water standards. Desolenator's modular architecture was designed to reach exactly that.

Semi-finalist status is the most rigorous third-party validation available in water technology today: independently assessed, publicly accountable, and backed by a $119M prize structure.

"
Desolenator has innovated a fundamentally different clean water supply architecture. The shift from centralized, energy-intensive desalination plants to distributed, energy-efficient solar or waste-heat-driven solutions to cost-competitively purify water is the structural change in approach that the potable-water-stressed and increasingly thirsty world needs now more so than ever. Reaching the top 20 globally reconfirms my conviction that this technology is ready to scale.
